I-League 2009/2010 Latest Standings
One thing i could notice here is that foreign players are doing very well at the cost of Indian players. Clubs are not giving chance to Indian players to showcase their talents. 90% players playing as central forward are foreign players. AIFF should wake up and should not come under pressure from clubs after all Indian football needs a big push and i hope new AIFF boss would deliver.
Cheers

Bagan score three points against Lajong
SHILLONG, Oct 29: Mohun Bagan came from behind to beat Shillong Lajong Football Club by 2-1 in the fifth round match of the I-League Soccer held at JN Sports Complex in Shillong today. The first half ended as goalless draw. Playing in front of a capacity crowd, Shillong outfit found in more positive mood and the side created at least three opportunities in that half. However, Bagan’s goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee was in a good form today and in a couple of occasions, he stopped the opponent to score.
Lajong was denied a penalty in the first half as Tuboi, who entered into the box with a brilliant move, was brought down by Deepak Mandal. The entire team and gallery shouted for the penalty but it didn’t make any impact on the referee PK Bose. Tuboi, who was the live wire in the match, excited the crowd again in the 41 minutes, as he sprint past Rakesh Masih on the left flank, but his touch was too heavy and the ball rolled just past the line for a goal kick.
The second half witnessed three goals and two of them were scored by the visitors after Lajong took the lead in the 52nd minute through a penalty. A spot kick was awarded in favour of Lajong, when Seikhohau Tuboi was brought down by Rakesh Masih inside the box. Skipper Aibor Khongee made no mistake to find the target. Lajong went defensive after the goal and it allowed Kolkata outfit to have a few shots at the opponent’s goal. It was unmarked Chidi Edeh who headed a cross from Snehasish Chakraborty into the net to score the equalizer for Mohun Bagan in the 62nd minute. Three minutes later, referee Bose caught Zohminguliana Ralte for bringing down Ishfaq Ahmed in the 30 yard arena and he awarded a free kick in favour of Bagan. Brazilian Marcos Pereira converted it to goal and helped his team to take the lead which also later sealed the fate of the match in favour of his team. Pereira was later adjudged the man of the match. THE SENTINEL

Praful Patel is new AIFF chief
NEW DELHI, Oct 19: In a change of guard since 1988, Praful Patel will be formally installed as the president of the All India Football Federation in place of ailing Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi at the Annual General Body Meeting of the AIFF on Tuesday.
Patel, the seniormost vice-president of the national body, has been the de facto head since Dasmunsi suffered a cardiac arrest in October last year and going by the constitution of the AIFF he will be elected as its president tomorrow.
Article 32 (6) of the AIFF Constitution says if the president is permanently or temporarily prevented from performing his official function, the longest serving Vice-President shall represent him until the next Annual General Body Meeting. The AGM shall elect a new President, if necessary.
Despite his illness, Dasmunsi was elected unopposed last December and Patel was made acting president.
Patel will be the only candidate to file his nomination tomorrow and he will be elected unopposed.
This will bring curtains to Dasmunsi’s 20-year reign as head of the national football body.
After the AGM, the AIFF wll felicitate national captain Bhaichung Bhutia for his 100th appearance for the country during the Nehru Cup held here earlier this here.
Bhutia is the 37th Asian and 152nd international footballer to have played more than 100 matches for his country.
The Sikkimese snipper is being involved in a bitter suspension row with Mohun Bagan but has been granted an interim relief to play for East Bengal in I-League. After his election as AIFF chief, Patel, who has been instrumental in bringing Rs 25 crore from the cash-rich Indian Cricket Board for development of football, will have to clear the mess the national body is currently in.
The fate of at least half a dozen tournaments are hanging in uncertainty, not to speak of the interview of the twin posts of AIFF General Secretary and I-League Chief Executive Officer.
The National Under-16 and Under-19 for boys, the National Under-19 for girls, Under-13 Festivals for boys and girls were to be held by October or November but no dates have been fixed as yet nor the host state has been finalised.
The Under-19 I-League, an important part of the youth development programme, was supposed to start by this month but nothing has been heard of it till now.
Similarly, the last Executive Committee meeting on August 30 had finalised Federation Cup final round in Guwahati from December 15 and the qualifiers from this month but there is no clue of when the qualifiers will start.
The careless functioning of the AIFF has also come under severe criticism from some of the candidates for the post of general secretary.
The August Executive Committee meeting fixed the date of interview for General Secretary on September 23 and 24 but none of the eight candidates for the post and five for I-League CEO have got their interview call letters.
One candidate has even gone to the extent of saying that some in the AIFF have been trying to prolong the current setup with Alberto Colaco as general secretary for some more time.
"It has been a month that the Executive Committee fixed the date of interview. It is a shame that the national football body has been run like this. What is the use of ExCo if its decisions were to be kept at abeyance?" he said on condition of anonymity.
"It seems nobody, be it the acting president or general secretary, cares about football matters. If they want to prolong the current setup why did they call for applying for the posts," he added.
The appointment of the I-League CEO was also long pending and when the advertisements came out in July it was thought that the national body means business and a new man will take office before the third edition of the league which began on October 1. (PTI)

Guwahati Super Division League match
By our Sports Reporter
GUWAHATI, SEPT 19: Assam State Electricity Board Sports Club (ASEBSC) will take on Assam Police Blues in a crucial match of the second leg Super Division League match which will be held at Nehru Stadium on September 21. It would be a do or die match for ASEBSC as they are now in a must win situation. Both the side had collected 22 points from their nine matches but in goal average AP Blues is much ahead then ASEBSC and a draw would be enough for the AP Blues to regain the league title. Meanwhile, FCISC today gave walkover to Asom Police Blues in the second leg match. THE SENTINEL

Football season of Guwahati should be longer: Tosen
Good turn out in the final of Bordoloi Trophy. Has it refreshed your playing days memory?
Yes, of course. I still believe that football is one of the most entertaining game of the world. During my days, I am talking about 1965-66, Bordoloi Trophy meant huge turn out in the gallery. But in the recent past, the number of crowd reduced drastically. There might be many reasons behind this but it is nice to see that people has started to show interest in football again and I feel it is a very positive sign for football of Guwahati.
Now you have involved yourself in coaching. Will you share your experience of coaching in Guwahati football?
From my experience, I can say that there are several grey areas in city football which should be removed if we really want to develop the game and bring back the lost glory of football in Guwahati. It is really a matter of surprise that football season in Guwahati has lasted only for three months. The clubs prepared their teams only for GSA League and once the league is completed, most of the clubs stop all the activities of the football until the next season comes. I agree that financial crisis is there and it is difficult for many clubs to arrange necessary funds for the entire season. But still, if we want to take football one step forward, then we must chalk out some plans and should work in that area giving equal effort from clubs, Gauhati Sports Association as well as Assam Football Association too. On the other hand, the ground too is another problem in Guwahati. We need some more grounds, otherwise we will not get any benefit even if clubs or GSA take any positive steps on the development of football.
Your comments on the scenario of football in Asom.
I have not seen anything laudable particularly in the senior category and I think improvement is not possible unless we take a few steps. No one will send his son to play football unless he sees that the game can secure the future of his son. The involvement of schools and colleges towards this game is very less. So you can’t expect that a player, who already takes huge pressure on studies, can give equal attention to the game. Okay, for a little while I agree that a player has the talent and he is doing well in the junior level but is there any guarantee that he can maintain consistency in his performance that can land him to a good job? So why the parents should not prefer his child to concentrate only in studies rather then sports and exactly it is happening in our State and we are losing footballers in the senior categories. Unless we don’t have good footballers in the senior level then it is difficult for us to take the game to a certain height.
Can Government play any role in that area?
Why not? Government can set a criteria for monthly sports pension for the veteran players. What will be the problem if Government can provide monthly sports pension, after the completion of 60 years of age, to a player who had represented the National team in senior category. Yes, Government can fix the amount of pension on the basis of matches the player will play for the country. There are many veteran players who were very good in their respective events during their days and represented country in different level but now passing their last part of the life in deep pain because of acute financial problem. It would be really nice if the Government could do something for them as it can also inspire the new generation to involve themselves more in sports. Government can even help the current players also by providing job not only in the Government offices but also in the private sector and multinational companies .
Are you satisfied with the role of Assam Football Association on the development of football in the State?
I don’t say that Assam Football Association (AFA) has done nothing in that area. But what I have noticed is that everything is not done with proper planning. Recently, AFA has arranged two coaching camps- one for senior and one for junior footballers in Guwahati. But these camps were held only for selected footballers and so we didn’t get much benefit from these camps. I think AFA should spread the coaching camp in the different districts of the State so that more and more footballers can get benefit from it. If AFA can’t alone do these things, they can take help of different clubs on providing experts and some funds. THE SENTINEL

ASEBSC lift 58th Bordoloi Trophy Soccer Trophy
By our Sports Reporter
GUWAHATI, Sept 18: Assam State Electricity Board Sports Club lifted the 58th Bordoloi Trophy Soccer Tournament title defeating Nagaland Police in a well contested final by 3-2, at Nehru Stadium today. It is for the third time, last in 2006, that the local outfit won the title.
The final was no doubt an entertaining one but apart from the performance of the two teams, a lot was discussed today on the huge turnout in the gallery. In the recent past, Gauhati Sports Association, the host of the meet, hardly was successful to bring a huge crowd in the final even if it was held under floodlights or foreign team in action in the title clash. But today, was a different day. Gallery numbers six and seven were totally packed and almost the same scenario was present in the covered gallery.
Good crowd always helped footballers to bring out the best and exactly the same things happened today. The crowd witnessed a well contested match which ASEBSC won after a tough fight.
Ganesh Rai, the coach of ASEBSC, knew it very well that Nagaland Police has already proved themselves as a giant killer in the tournament and if they allow the team to settle down, then it will not be an easy match for his team. So the coach decided to go for all out attack from the very beginning and it paid the dividend. The sudden attack perhaps surprised Nagaland Police a little and ASEBSC capitalized the opportunity. The local outfit needed just a minute to went ahead in the match through Jilendra Brahma. The side scored another one in the 6th minute and this time Resangpemmi Kasomnoshi put the ball inside the net, capitalizing the mistake of opponent goalkeeper Zuthungo. Nagaland Police started to get back into the game after this goal and they made a several good moves thereafter. But still they failed to stop ASEBSC to score one more goal in the first half. The match was 37 minutes old when Sanjiva Rongpi forwarded a good pass to Birendra Narzary and the senior member of the team did not upset the supporters. Nagaland Police reduced one in the first half via Alfred. In the second half, the team also closed in more then one occasion to score but they were successful only once in the dying stage of the game and the goal was scored by Sakur.
Talking to The Sentinel just after the final, the coach of ASEBSC Ganesh Rai, today gave the entire credit to his team members for winning the title. “Nagaland Police was a good side but my players were determined that they would play good soccer in the final and would win the trophy. “Our target was to score early goals in the match so that we could put pressure on the opponent and once it happened, the job was easy for us”. On the other hand, dejected looking Nagaland Police coach Ratan T today admitted that the first two goals of ASEBSC were the turning points of the game. Talking to The Sentinel after the final, Ratan, who took over the charge of the team just before the tournament, said “we played good soccer in the tournament and were hopeful to repeat the same in the final. But conceding two goals in the early stage of the game has unsettled all our plans. I also felt that my defence line too failed to play as per the expectation today”.
The goalkeeper of ASEBSC Daoga Bramha, was adjudged as the best goalkeeper of the tournament while the captain of winning squad Mitradev Swargiary, collected the best player of the final award, given by the Assam Sports Journalists’ Association, from the hand of former International footballer Tosen Bora. Dibrugarh MP Pawan Singh Ghatowar, was the chief guest in the closing function. THE SENTINEL

Nagaland Police fix date with ASEBSC in Bordoloi Trophy final
GUWAHATI, Sept 16: Nagaland Police’s good run in the Bordoloi Trophy continued as the side upset defending champion Oil India Limited Football Club (OILFC) by a solitary goal in the second semi final to earn the final berth in the 58th Bordoloi Trophy Soccer Tournament held at Nehru Stadium here today. Nagaland Police will now face ASEBSC in the final which will be held on Friday.
It was the second upset done by Nagaland Police in this edition of the tournament. They earlier shown the door to Mohammedan Sporting in the quarter final. Like the quarter final, Nagaland Police today also played a very calculative game putting more players on the defence and waited for the opportunities to go for counter attack.
On the other hand, Oil India Limited Football Club, who went to the ground as favourite, perhaps were over confident. Otherwise, the opportunities the side got in the 90 minutes were enough to settle the game in favour of them. Jayanta Basumatari alone missed more then five easy opportunities.
The only goal, that OILFC conceded, was a lapse from the side of goalkeeper. Namoaiboungnane’s free kick couldn’t be collected properly by goalkeeper Prandeep Dutta and ball came out from his hand which was pushed in by Saku in the 60th minute of the match. Thereafter, OILFC opened several opportunities but all were wasted.
Meanwhile, the final match of the tournament will be held on Friday where Nagaland Police will now meet ASEBSC. ASEBSC in the other semi final, defeated Peerless Club, Kolkata by 2-1 on way to march into the title clash. THE SENTINEL

Nagaland Police beat Mohammedan Sporting in Bordoloi Trophy
GUWAHATI, Sept 14: Nagaland Police stunned Mohammedan Sporting in the last quarter final of the 58th Bordoloi Trophy Soccer Tournament held at Nehru Stadium. The fancied outfit of Kolkata today lost the tie by 0-3 in the tie break and the defeat thrashed them out from the tournament.
The defeat of Mohammedan Sporting today is the biggest upset of this edition of Bordoloi Trophy. This time Gauhati Sports Association has invited two top teams- one from Senegal and the other Mohammedan Sporting to increase the charm of the tournament. Senegal outfit didn’t turn out to take part in the meet while Mohammedan Sporting bowed out from the championship in their first match which possibly fade a few attractions of the tournament.
A good number of crowd today turned out to witness the match of Mohammedan Sporting but the side, who came to play in the tournament winning the Bodoland Martyrs’ Gold Cup, today upset the fans with a very poor performance. It never looked like that the side could win the match in the schedule time as most of the footballers looked tired and in many occasions they didn’t look interested to chase the ball.
Few former footballers, who were present in the ground to witness the match, were very surprised to see the performance of Mohammedan Sporting today. Debashish Roy, who was once the regular member of a few big clubs of Kolkata, didn’t bother to say that he never expected such performance from this team. “The performance of the team never gave any indication that the side could win the game. It looked like that the players were very tired and they were not interested to play in the game. I was also surprised to see the way they took the penalty shot”.
The only players who really tried to do something for Mohammedan Sporting was its captain Jothi Kumar. He took a lot of load in the match and also created a few good opportunities to his team mates who failed to capitalize it. On the other hand, Nagaland Police didn’t try too much in the game and they just hung around to take the game into the tie breaker and goalkeeper Zuthunga did the rest of the things.
The hero of the team is undoubtedly Zuthunga, who saved three shots in the tie break to take the team into the semi final. After being goal less in the scheduled time, the match went to the tie break where Zuthunga saved all three shots of Mohammedan Sporting taken by Bijoy Das, Md Sahid and Anupam Sarkar. Nagaland Police’s first shot, taken by Ninja, was blocked by Mohammedan Sporting goalkeeper Naseem Akhtar, while the next three shots were converted by Saku, Alfred and Zanthungo.

Peerless Club move to semi final of Bordoloi Trophy
By our Sports Reporter
GUWAHATI, Sept 13: Peerless Sports Club, Kolkata became the third team who earned the semi final berth of the 58th Bordoloi Trophy Soccer Tournament. In the third quarter final, held at Nehru Stadium today, Peerless defeated Gauhati Town Club by a solitary goal.
Peerless, who came as a last minute replacement of Senegal team, is coached by former National footballer– Mihir Bose. On paper, there was not too much difference between Peerless and Gauhati Town Club but Kolkata outfit entered into the semi final because the team had converted the opportunity into goal which Gauhati Town Club failed to do so.
Gauhati Town Club conceded the only goal in the 31 minutes due to defensive lapse. The defence line failed to make proper off side trap and utilizing the opportunity, E Charles scored the only goal of the match. Gauhati Town Club created a few opportunities and once reached very close to return the goal. However, even getting the opponent’s goalkeeper on wrong foot, Lanka Basumatary shot the ball to the goalkeeper Prasenjit Debnath’s hand. Prasenjit failed to collect the ball properly and ball came out from his grip but Janak Deuri, who made the second attempt, also shot the ball to Prasenjit’s hand.
Meanwhile, six times champion Mohammedan Sporting arrived in the city today to take part in the tournament. In the last quarter final, which is scheduled to be held tomorrow, will meet Nagaland Police. THE SENTINEL

Defamation charges against Mohun Bagan
Bhutia, through his legal counsel Usha Nath Banerjee, has written to Mohun Bagan and demanded the amount for ‘damaging’ his reputation.
“Bhutia is a big name in Indian football and by questioning his commitment and making false allegations, they (Bagan) have damaged his reputation. We have claimed Rs one crore as defamation in a letter to the club,” Banerjee said.
Asked about the claim from Bhutia, Bagan general secretary Anjan Mitra said, “I am yet to see the letter. Let them demand anything.”
Bhutia was suspended for six months without pay by Mohun Bagan in June for missing a few team training sessions and an exhibition match.
The dispute between the club and the national football icon is now pending before an arbitrator, former Solicitor General of India Amarendra Sharan after Indian Football Association and All India Football Association (AIFF) failed to resolve it.
Sharan heard both the parties in New Delhi yesterday and fixed September 13 as the next date of hearing.
Reports said Bhutia has asked the arbitrator for an interim relief that will enable him to play in the forthcoming Durand Cup in New Delhi.
Mohun Bagan management is believed to have asked for compensation though Mitra denied it.
“There is no question of compensation. If he wants to play football in India, he has to play for us as per the contract. We stick to our stand,” Mitra said.
Earlier, Bhutia had made an appeal to the IFA to resolve the dispute but AIFF took up the matter. The national body’s Players’ Status Committee, however, failed to decide on the matter as one member refused to give his opinion.
The AIFF then asked its outgoing general secretary Alberto Colaco to mediate between Mohun Bagan and Bhutia.
After Colaco could not find a solution, the AIFF executive committee in its meeting on August 30 decided to refer the matter to an arbitrator. (PTI)
